MIAMI, United States. — The authorities in Havana imposed fines of 8,000 Cuban pesos on carriers in the capital for overcharging fares.

A note appeared in the Portal del Ciudadano de La Habana indicates that the measures were applied as a result of an inspection carried out by the Provincial Inspection Directorate in various areas of the city.

Those sanctioned were a driver who charged 200 Cuban pesos for a journey between Havana and Santiago de las Vegas; another that imposed a fee of 150 pesos for the section between the municipality of Cotorro and Parque del Curita (Central Havana) and a third that charged 100 pesos for a route between El Cotorro and the Virgen del Camino (San Miguel del Padrón).

The authorities assured that they were “unscrupulous people” who, “taking advantage of the current situation in the country, have increased the cost of passenger transportation.”

According to the Provincial Directorate of Inspection of Havana, the increase in rates “violates the provisions of the law” and “generates discomfort among the inhabitants and residents of the city.”

The statement emphasized that “the abusive charging of passenger transport is one of the issues that most irritates the population in the country, and in the capital, in particular.”

“In all cases, the offenders were notified with fines of 8,000 Cuban pesos, as established in Decree 30/21 ‘Of personal violations, sanctions, measures and procedures to be applied for the violation of the norms that govern the policy. of prices and tariffs.

private carriers that operate both in Havana and in other territories of the country have alleged on several occasions that the rates established by the authorities do not benefit those who operate the vehicles. Some have acknowledged having to overcharge the trip to be able to afford the maintenance of their vehicles and fuel. Others, on the other hand, have been forced to abandon the activity due to low profits, which make their business unsustainable.
