MININT confirms deportation flight: 66 Cubans were repatriated

MIAMI, United States. — The Cuban Ministry of the Interior (MININT) confirmed this Wednesday the second deportation flight from the United States in just two weeks.

A note of that organization published by the state press indicates that 66 people (60 men and six women) who had arrived irregularly in the northern country were returned to the island.

“The United States authorities carried out this Wednesday the second operation to return irregular migrants by air in 2023, with 66 people (60 men and six women) who were indistinctly captured when they reached the coasts by sea or when crossing the border. with Mexico,” the statement said.

The information specifies that of the total number of deportees “a total of 35 had left the country illegally by sea and were detained when they set foot on US soil, while 31 left legally by air and then used irregular routes until they reached the southern border.”

The MININT adds that more than half of the deported migrants who were detained after entering the US had crossed several countries before reaching the southern border.

With the 66 Cubans repatriated this Wednesday, there are 2,708 migrants from the island who have been returned from the US so far this year, and 3,646 if those who have been returned from different countries in the area are added.

In the afternoon today Telemundo had reported on the new deportation operation. However, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) had refused to comment to that chain on the number of migrants that would be returned on this occasion.

The flights to deport migrants from the US, suspended since 2020, resumed on April 24, when 123 irregular migrants were returned: 40 rafters and 83 other people who remained detained on the southern border of the northern country.
