The retired military (and leader of Cabildo Abierto) Raul Lozano has been named as the new Minister of Housing and Territorial Planning in Uruguayafter Irene Moreira resigned from her position due to the controversy generated by the direct delivery of a house to a militant of the aforementioned party.
Lozano’s appointment has been confirmed by the party leader Guido Manini Rioswho has mentioned that he fully trusts him and that President Luis Lacalle Pou has called to confirm his appointment.
Lozano met with the President yesterday afternoon to discuss issues related to the Ministry of Housing and Territorial Planning. When he was consulted about the Moreira case, preferred not to comment and stated that he always tries to look ahead and find solutions to real problems.
Crack in the coalition over the Moreira case
Criticism of Manini Ríos for his tone in public statements has been questioned by some voices within the coalition. However, Lozano has affirmed that her party will continue to be part of the coalition and has commented that the majority of the Political Table has shared this position.
The new Minister has also indicated that he will meet with the President to revoke the resolution in which Town meeting is based to defend the actions of Moreira, which cost him his position in the Ministry.
Moreira’s request for resignation was made public last Friday morning, causing great discomfort in the lobbying party, which has since threatened to withdraw and break with the government coalition.
However, after a weekend of uncertainty, Manini announced that his party will continue to form part of the governmentbut with demands regarding the internal functioning of the coalition.
