The wave of femicides in the North Caribbean of Nicaragua has reached alarming numbers: seven women murdered so far this year, the last one is a 12-year-old girl.
The organizations, which in the territories work against sexist violence, say they are under “extreme concern”, because in less than two months, at least five women out of the seven so far this year in that area of the country have been murdered. under violent attack.
Regarding the last victim in this area, the 12-year-old girl was shot to death by an alleged criminal who entered to rob the house she lived in, located in Bonanza. Preliminary information indicates that upon being discovered by the girl, the perpetrator fired two shots at her.

The women’s human rights defender, who is also a sociologist, said that the wave of violence in the country, mainly in the North Caribbean, is due to the lack of protection that women face by the Nicaraguan State.

«The North Caribbean is the first department with the most reported femicides, there are many causes that influence these crimes; there is impunity, drug trafficking, normalization of poverty and violence. Given the increase in femicides in that area of Nicaragua, the specialist calls on the regime for the closure of feminist organizations that in the country dedicated efforts to accompany women victims of violence to file a complaint and achieve justice against their aggressors.
«If before there were three organizations that accompanied women to file a complaint or psychological accompaniment, that was very little, the problem is that now, there is absolutely nothing. The community fabric does not exist, and the defenders are in search of their own survival, of their own protection in the face of repression. Women are completely on their own,” she said.

The violence that is experienced in this area of Nicaragua could decrease if a comprehensive education is implemented that involves children and adults, says the expert.
“The Caribbean Coast needs special attention and special investigation, which explains what is happening because the situation is complicated, it is very different from Managua, where there is also a lot of violence, but it also has to do with the level of population there is. in the capital, but the Caribbean Coast is extremely poor and rural, so there is no attention there at all and it is very complicated, a specific specialized focus of attention is needed for investigation and attention,” the defender recommended.
So far this year, at least 38 women have been violently murdered across the country. The largest number of victims have been reported in the Nicaraguan Caribbean.
