Divino Niño Jesús parish, located in El Viejo, Chinandega, desecrated

Divino Niño Jesús parish, located in El Viejo, Chinandega, desecrated

The parishioners of the Divino Niño neighborhood of El Viejo, in Chinandega, denounced theft and destruction in the atrium and the Rectory of the community temple, which was perpetrated by unknown subjects, while the parish priest of the church was detained after seeing involved in a traffic accident.

“It is outrageous what they have done. They took advantage of the fact that the father was in jail and the temple alone, they entered to loot it. They broke doors, tables and benches”, stated a member of the parish community.

Another indignant resident recounted that the sacrilegious stole the gas tank from the church, the tires of a tricycle and the snack that is given to the children, she explained. A mother of a family who knew about the criminal act declared herself upset and offended. “This has no name,” she said.

Theft and vandalism are blamed on a gang that is the “scourge” of the community and does not even respect the church. The subjects have broken into the temple on two previous occasions and although they were reported to the police, they were never arrested. Less will happen now, that the authorities rather repress the clergy and Catholic citizens.

Complaints do not stop criminals

The citizens said for this report that they had previously denounced the criminals and that for this reason they did not explain why they enjoy freedom despite the fact that citizens have also complained of assaults and incursions into private homes to steal what belongs to others.

“In this area, there are constant robberies, this sector is one of the most insecure in the municipality due to the lack of police patrol,” they complained. Regarding this last misdeed, they presume that at least two subjects entered the temple, taking advantage of the fact that it was desolate. On Friday morning, members of the parish found the mess.

“What these bandits have done is sacrilege and desecration against the Catholic Church. An attack on our faith, we already know who they are, but they will be punished by divine justice because earthly justice does not exist in this country,” said another complainant.

Prisoner imprisonment

The parishioners of the Divino Niño Jesús Parish lamented the imprisonment of the 65-year-old priest Bayardo Aguilar Ocón, who on Monday, May 1, allegedly injured a cyclist at the traffic lights of the “Miguel Ángel Ortiz y Guillén” National Institute (INMAOG), Chinandega.

Unofficially, it was known that both the priest and the cyclist were injured. The police arrested the priest and transferred him to the delegation. That same day, they opened the charge for minor injuries.

The file against the religious quickly passed into the hands of the assistant prosecutor María Francis Pérez Mojica. The father was held for five days and was not released until he signed a payment agreement with the victim.

The case was heard before the First Local Judge of Chinandega, Emma Chavarría, who issued the precautionary measure of preventive detention during the preliminary hearing. “Do you know how many traffic accidents occur in Chinandega? Uff!, the driver and the injured person reach an agreement, mediate, anyway. Here they put the father in prison, because there was ill will from the authorities”, questioned a parishioner.

With the priest released and the support of the parishioners, they hope to replace what was stolen and repair the damage. While the sacrilegious, “whipping” of the old citizens, remain free and committing their misdeeds with impunity.

Father Aguilar arrived on January 28, 2022 at the Divino Niño Jesús parish. He spent 24 years in pastoral service in the Santísimo Redentor parish, in Colonia Roberto González, in the municipality of Chinandega. The religious enjoys the affection of the parishioners, his priestly life has been spent with the humblest and poorest people in the department.
