This Tuesday, the Chamber of Senators will meet to discuss various points of interest, among them, the vote for the reinstatement of Irene Moreira as a legislator. Let’s remember that Moreira was elected by the population to fill that position, but the Executive Branch appointed her as Minister of Housing, from which she resigned last Friday.
Moreira leaves the position in the MVOT after the scandal for giving a social housing directly to a militant of his own party, Cabildo Abierto.
As reported by Moreira herself, she would return to work in Parliament starting today, Monday, with a special focus “on the vulnerable population.” Guido Manini Ríos, leader of the Cabildo Abierto and her husband, confirmed that her former minister will appear at the Legislative Palace today, to begin her new stage as a legislator.
Political sources informed the press that the vote for Moreira’s reinstatement as a senator will take place during the session on Tuesday.
Moreira’s return to the Senate may be welcomed by those who chose her to represent them, but her departure from the ministry and return to the parliamentary instance generated cracks and tensions in the ruling multicolored coalition.
The Penadés license amid a mountain of complaints
The senator of the National Party, Gustavo Penadés, is currently in the eye of the hurricane after having been denounced on at least six occasions for sexual abuse of minors. Prosecutor Alicia Ghione is conducting an exhaustive investigation in this regard and he decided to take leave from his legislative work.
In a letter sent to Vice President Beatriz Argimón, who is also president of the General Assembly, the legislator requested a leave of absence for personal reasons for one month. This issue has been discussed by the bench of senators from the National Party, and it was recently announced that two new complaints for events that occurred last year were filed by minors involving Senator Penadés.
On Tuesday, a vote will be taken on whether or not the request for a private license by Penadés is accepted. Originally he had decided not to ask for it, with the understanding that he would be tacitly accepting responsibility, and he has repeated on countless occasions that he is innocent of all accusations.
