Caracas firefighters have attended 278 forest fires in 2023

The fire brigade has identified the Waraira Repano National Park, the foothills of the Centro Regional Highway, the Vinicio Adames National Park and the entire wooded area of El Junquito and the Pan-American Highway as places at risk of forest fires.

The Caracas Fire Department records 278 forest fires attended so far in 2023, a high rate due to high temperatures that have hit Venezuela at the beginning of the year.

According to the commander of the Caracas Fire Department, only in the last week 28 fires were attended, an increase that coincides with an increase in temperature in recent days.

“We are deployed throughout the city of Caracas, attending to all forest fires. In the year we have attended 278 fires and this week 28″, he indicated in statements collected by Union Radio.

The official explained that various reasons explain the frequency of fires. Among them, he highlighted climate changes due to the effect of the La Niña phenomenon, high temperatures, the imprudence of citizens who light bonfires or leave cigarette butts and even the organized burning of flammable material.

Finally, he reported that the authorities are currently deployed as part of the National Risk Control System, in which the Government of Caracas, the Libertador Mayor’s Office, the Ministry of Ecosocialism, the Unified Command Against Forest Fires, the Defense Operational Zone Integral (ZODI) of the Capital District, the National Guard, among others.

In the midst of the climate emergency facing the country, Nicolás Maduro also asked Venezuelans to prepare, especially after the reports issued by the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inameh) indicating the high temperatures registered in a large part of the national territory.

Both Civil Protection and the different fire departments in the country urge the general population to report to the authorities when there is an unusual fire in the vegetal lung.
