Given the drop in temperatures, people run to the markets not only for sweaters, bedspreads and thick socks, but also for stoves. Some gas and others electric, but how recommendable are these devices for use in the room? Experts say that they have more harm than benefits, find out why.

Ramiro Céspedes, a general practitioner, explained that most of these devices do not have a thermostat, which generates very violent temperature rises and without exact measurement, which can cause problems in people’s health.

As explained by the doctor, by international standard a pleasant and tolerable temperature for the human body should be between 25 degrees Celsius and a relative humidity of the environment between 50 to 70%; however, these devices do not have a mechanism to measure that temperature.

“Past 25 degrees the body loses the ability to defend itself (…) because it is not a normal temperature, these implements raise the temperature quickly, with violent changes in temperature we only manage to get sick”, explained Céspedes.

For her part, Yolanda Tomichá, pediatrician, complemented that electrical devices, although they do not produce much “toxic substrate”, that is, they do not release carbon dioxide or monoxide, give off a gas that replaces oxygen in the lungs and can lead to lung blockage and affect normal oxygenation.

“With this device there is also the risk of short circuits and therefore fires”Tomichá maintained.

Furthermore, Céspedes maintained that It is not indicated for patients suffering from arthritis.

“This technology works with incandescent heat (a resistance is heated), which has direct effects on health. By heating the resistance very close to us it will cause vascular effects, if we have varicose veins it will ruin them even more. And there is the problem of arthritis, which is dependent on temperature, (…) . Exposure to a hot environment, and then to a cold one (such as when going in and out of an office or home) is will produce joint pain, worsening the conditions of a patient with arthritis or any type of rheumatic affliction”, according to the doctor.

To these warnings, he adds that stoves can “worsen heart condition because increasing the temperature will raise blood pressure discreetly,” he said.

But according to the doctor, the biggest problem for the respiratory system is the gas burners that produce carbon monoxide that when inhaled by humans can be lethal.
