The Minister of Housing and Territorial Planning (MVOT), Irene Moreirais in the midst of controversy after it was revealed that the wallet directly handed over a home to a member of the Cabildo Abierto political partyled by her husband, Senator Guido Manini Rios.
As reported by radio Universalin December 2021, the Ministry of Housing opened a call (public call) for the acquisition of two and three-bedroom homes, under the modality of Rent with option to buyin a building located at the corner of Nueva York and Yí streets, in the neighborhood of Aguada.
Demand was high, with a total of 285 applicants to gain access to one of the 12 slots that were going to be raffled off.
However, according to the aforementioned media, the secretary of the minister, Roel Bottari, sent an email addressed to the national director of Housing, Jorge Cerettain which he expressed the interest of Moreira that one of the apartments was directly awarded to a Cabildo Abierto militant.
After the management carried out, in September 2022, the person in charge of preparing the social reports reported that Mónica Mabel Píriz Ciria met the requirements to be assigned one of those homes, as was the will of Minister Moreira.
Request for reports and heads rolling
The controversy was not long in coming, and the senators of the Broad Front presented a letter requesting the appearance of Moreira to the Senate to provide explanations on this topic. Likewise, the general director of Housing, gabriel bathrobesubmitted his resignation, alleging differences in the management of the minister and this particular case.
Minister Moreira has maintained that the due processes were followed to award a house directly and that the commission determined that the person in question met the conditions to receive the house. In addition, she has indicated that this modality of “direct award” is used in some cases and that it has nothing to do with the person being a member of the Cabildo Abierto.
For his part, Guido Manini Ríos defended the award and assured that the corresponding protocols and processes were followed.
