Nicaragua formalizes agreement with Russia on atomic energy

With 80 votes in favor, 10 against, and one present, the deputies of the National Assembly, under the orders of Daniel Ortega, approved this Tuesday, May 2, a cooperation agreement between Nicaragua and Russia for the development of atomic energy ” for peaceful purposes.”

The official deputy Walmaro Gutierrez He maintained that with the approval of this agreement, the quality of life of Nicaraguans will improve, because “through the development of technology, the development of technique, invention, and knowledge, there have been many other countries that have been experimenting and finding in atomic energy the use of it to improve the living standards of humanity, and it is to this use for peaceful purposes that this international agreement refers.

“This is an extremely important step for Nicaraguans and we believe that within the framework of guaranteeing better technologies to guarantee better safety practices for our food, to improve the production and productivity of our food, (…) in short, for a wide variety of uses, this type of tool is very positive,” he said.

On April 13, Daniel Ortega presented to the National Assembly the initiative for a legislative decree to approve the “Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Nicaragua and the Government of the Russian Federation on cooperation in the field of non-energy applications of atomic energy for peaceful purposes”so that the process of formation of law was granted.

Ortega’s justification for sending the bill was based on the fact that “the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes represents an opportunity for humanity to attend to and confront global problems.”

In addition, he pointed out that the use of this energy contributes “to the States to comply with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), approved by the United Nations Organization in 2015.”

The signing of the cooperation agreement between Russia and Nicaragua took place in the Russian capital, Moscow, on March 29.

The head of the Rosatom nuclear power corporation, Alexei Likhachevparticipated in the signing representing Russia, while the Ortega dictatorship sent a delegation headed by the foreign minister Denis Moncada to sign the agreement.

The commission was made up of the son of the presidential couple, Laureano Ortega; the deputy director of the National Police, general commissioner Zhukov Serrano; and the Inspector General of the Nicaraguan Army, Marvin Corrales.

On November 21, Russia and Nicaragua signed a roadmap for the use of atomic Energy for peaceful purposes, when drawing up the guidelines of cooperation.

Nicaragua and Russia had already agreed to cooperate in the field of atomic energy in December 2021, although it was not until October of last year that Daniel Ortega authorized the signing of a roadmap.

The Government of Nicaragua hopes that Russian cooperation will strengthen “the capacities of professionals, especially in the field of medicine, hydraulic, geothermal and wind energy.”

Although now that the agreement with Russia is “marred” with arguments related to the “peaceful use” of atomic energy, the dictator Daniel Ortega has already expressed his interest in interfering in these matters for “military purposes.”

June 23, 2021, Ortega himself came out in one of his usual appearances to rant against the United States. There he himself claimed the right of his regime to “develop atomic energy for peaceful purposes and military purposes.”

“It is true that we have declared this entire region a zone of peace, which implies not developing atomic weapons, but if we are going to see in justice, with what right and for what reason, only the rich countries have the right to arm themselves with weapons. atomic…if we are going to act fairly, just as much right does a country have to seek to develop atomic energy for peaceful purposes or for military purposes, as does a developing country have the same right to develop atomic energy for peaceful and military purposes.” Ortega justified at the time.
