Industrial production closed the year 2021 with a rise of 3.9%, according to the Monthly Industrial Survey (PIM Regional) released today (9) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). With the result of December, last year closed with growth in 9 of the 15 analyzed locations.
“The year 2021 ended on a positive note, but it was volatile during the months. In the first semester, the trajectory was more increasing, and the accumulated gain reached 13%. But, in the second semester, there was a loss of breath and production had a sequence of falls”, said, in a note, the research manager, Bernardo Almeida. From November to December, industrial production expanded in 10 of the 15 areas surveyed.
highlights
In 2021, the highlights were the results of Santa Catarina (10.3%), Minas Gerais (9.8%) and Paraná (9%), the first in absolute growth, in addition to São Paulo (5.2%) , the greatest influence on the expansion presented in 2021, largely due to the size and weight of the São Paulo industrial park.
Eleven of the 18 activities in São Paulo’s industry grew in the year, with emphasis on the vehicle sector, where trucks, automobiles and tractor trucks for trailers had the most relevant increases. “The machinery and equipment sector, with an increase in the production of excavators, bearings for industrial equipment and loaders-carriers, also contributed”, stated Almeida.
According to the IBGE, in the state of Santa Catarina, the clothing sector boosted growth, with an increase in the production of women’s knitted shirts and blouses and the production of knitted dresses. Metallurgy also collaborated, with a rise in artifacts and cast iron parts.
sectors
The metallurgical sector also contributed in Minas Gerais, the second positive national influence. The metallurgy of Minas presented an increase in the production of ferroniobium and in the steel industry. The extractive sector was also relevant for the mining industry in 2021, with higher production of iron ore, but the main influence was the vehicle sector, where tractor trucks for trailers and vehicles for transporting goods boosted the activity’s production.
Paraná had the third biggest expansion in the absolute and was also the third biggest influence on the national annual result. Spurred on by the machinery and equipment sector, the industry in Paraná had an increase in the production of harvesting machines and agricultural tractors. The vehicle sector, with an increase in the production of tractor trucks for trailers and trucks and automobiles, also contributed to the increase in the state.
Rio Grande do Sul (8.8%), Amazonas (6.4%), Espírito Santo (4.9%) and Rio de Janeiro (4%) also recorded positive rates higher than the national average (3.9% ), while Ceará (3.7%) completed the group of places with increase in production in the index accumulated in the year.

Bahia had the highest decrease (-13.2%) in the index accumulated in the year. “Direct effect of the departure of a vehicle manufacturer from the state, in January of last year, which affected the entire year”, said the research analyst.
The oil derivatives sector also negatively pressured the results of the Bahian industry, where there was a drop in the production of fuel oils, diesel oil, naphtha for petrochemicals, paraffin and kerosene.
The Northeast Region (-6.2%) and the states of Goiás (-4.0%), Pará (-3.7%), Mato Grosso (-1%) and Pernambuco (-0.4%) also presented negative rates in the accumulated indicator for the period January-December 2021.
