Tarek William Saab: Corruption plot in PDVSA sought an "implosion of the economy"

According to official information offered by different officials of the Nicolás Maduro administration, since the anti-corruption operation began in the country, in mid-March, the authorities have seized a total of 1,007 assets, including houses, vehicles, offices, and companies. Also, to date, there are 61 detainees, the majority linked to PDVSA.

Prosecutor Tarek William Saab, appointed by the extinct Constituent Assembly, affirmed this Sunday, April 30, that those involved in the corruption plot involving Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) and other public institutions sought to generate an “implosion” in the Venezuelan economy to cause an unfavorable “political balance” for the State.

“The conclusion is clear, generating an implosion of the Venezuelan economy to seek an unfavorable balance for the Venezuelan State, because all that money for where and for what, obviously, obeyed a disastrous political plan that has not only been prosecuted and processed, Otherwise, it has been discovered and those responsible have been arrested,” he said in an interview on the private channel Globovisión.

Saab pointed out that since mid-March, when the anti-corruption operation began in Venezuela, to date, there have been 61 detainees, the majority linked to PDVSA.

He also said that all those arrested have been charged with the crime of “treason against the homeland.”

According to him, the officials “using the positions they had” proceeded to carry out oil purchase-sale operations with “the modality” of the ships. “Many of those ships were lost, the money did not appear,” he added.

The prosecutor maintained that there was “no type of administrative or treasury control” over the entry of money from these operations, “obviously in breach of contracting regulations.”

“After they sold the assigned crude on the ships, illegally, they failed to make the corresponding payments to whom, to PDVSA, I think they seek to embezzle the national economy,” he added.

Saab also pointed out that the amount of these operations is “important”, but did not specify the figure.

On Friday, April 28, Nicolás Maduro affirmed that since the anti-corruption operation began in the country, in mid-March, the authorities have seized a total of 1,007 assets, including houses, vehicles, offices, and companies.
