Maggy Talavera becomes the first woman to chair the Santa Cruz Association of Journalists

The Prensa Libre front, led by Maggy Talavera Román, was the winner of the elections of the Association of Journalists of Santa Cruz (APSC), which were held this Saturday, April 29.

The president of the electoral body, Mario Panique, declared Talavera and his front the winner, the only one who stood for the election, after the vote count was completed to elect the new Board of Directors for the 2023-2025 term.

Panique indicated that the elections were carried out normally and with the participation of the majority of the affiliates, who They went to vote at the Museum of Independence.

Maggy Talavera has a extensive and distinguished career in national journalism. She is 61 years old and is a journalist trained at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brazil.

Throughout her 39 years of journalism, she has been a reporter for the newspapers El Mundo and El Día; correspondent for Presencia and Agencia EFE; editor and director of El Nuevo Día, editor-in-chief of El Deber and co-founder of the alternative media outlets Graffitti, Semanario Número 1, Semanario Uno and columnist for Reflejos, Campo, Tupambaé, Página Siete, EL DEBER and Los Tiempos.

It was the first and until today only woman to be elected executive secretary of the Union of Press Workers of Santa Cruz and will now preside over the APSC for the next two years.

Among the most outstanding awards received throughout his career are: National Press Award and Medal of Merit New Generations “Huáscar Cajías” the Association of Journalists of La Paz; National Award for Journalism “Oscar Zambrano” from the College of Communicators of Santa Cruz; Medal of Municipal Merit for contributions to the Society of the Mayor’s Office of Santa Cruz de la Sierra; “Freedom of Expression” Award, granted by the Santa Cruz Association of Journalists; and the 2022 National Journalism Prize awarded by the Association of Journalists of La Paz.

In September 2016, she was recognized by the Master in Innovation in Journalism of the Miguel Hernández University, in Spain, as one of the most influential and innovative journalists in Latin America. She is a teacher at Unifraz and directs MaggyTalavera #PeriodismoSinPhotoshop.
