Violent incidents at an African Champions League match in Tunisia

The quarterfinal match of the African Champions League soccer match between the Tunisian Esperance and the Algerian Jeunesse Sportive de Kabylia was interrupted for more than thirty minutes due to violent incidents, which even caused a small fire, this Saturday in Tunisia.

According to Mosaique radio and other press testimonies, Esperance fans tried to jump onto the pitch after the first half, but the police stopped him and that started the altercations.

An AFP photographer saw scenes of destruction in the stands and the firing of tear gas to control the situation, which caused a thick cloud of smoke.

Images posted live on Facebook showed a fire truck putting out the small fire.

The game could be resumed around 20:45 GMT (16:45 HB), before some stands practically empty on the Esperance side.

Esperance and JSK tied and the Tunisians, who had won the first leg in AlgiersThey qualified for the semifinals.

The AFP photographer testified to at least twenty policemen and several injured fans.
