MIAMI, United States. — The President of the Commission for Science and Higher Education of the Russian Duma, Sergey Kabyshev, assured that that country values the possibility of offering university scholarships to Cuban students, a practice that has become extensive in the days of the extinct Soviet Union.
The information came out during a meeting with the former rector of the University of Havana, Gustavo Cobreiro Suárez, current Counselor for Education and Science of the Embassy of the Cuban regime in that country.
According to portal of the Russian Dumathe meeting addressed the issue of increasing the entrance fee to Russian universities for Cuban citizens, an initiative that seeks to expand humanitarian cooperation with Latin American countries, and in particular with Cuba.
According to Kabyshev, this is an issue of particular importance in the current geopolitical conditions.
Currently, 318 Cuban students are studying in Russia, 82 people entered in the 2022-2023 academic year.
The note indicates that the training areas most in demand among Cubans are electrical and thermal engineering, oil and gas business, electric power and electrical engineering, computer science and information technology.
Sergei Kabyshev also expressed that it is necessary to “develop cooperation with Cuban universities on issues such as the organization of Russian language and culture courses for students, and encourage the holding of educational events dedicated to the Russian language, education and culture Russian”.
As part of this plan, it is expected that in the near future a preparatory faculty of the Federal University of the South will open in Cuba, in which the pre-university training of Cuban applicants will be carried out “not only in the Russian language as a means of obtain a specialty, but also in the main subjects of engineering, technical, natural sciences, humanitarian, pedagogical and socioeconomic profiles”.
