The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) condemned “the new acts of lethal violence against the Mayangna indigenous communities in Nicaragua”, which resulted in the murder of the indigenous leader and forest ranger Bernabe Palacios Hernandez44 years old.
Last Monday, April 24, community leaders denounced that “the murder was carried out by armed settlers on the family agricultural plot, located in the sector known as Siwah Asang.”
They also detailed that with the death of Bernabé, many families were forced to leave the community to nearby places, in order to safeguard their lives.

Faced with the wave of violence in the area, community members they declared a red alert and urged the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo to clarify the cases of murders and attacks suffered by the Mayangnas at the hands of the settlers and put those responsible for the crimes behind bars.

“We call once again on the Government of Nicaragua to assume its responsibility in guaranteeing the right to life of indigenous communities and to guarantee the right to communal property,” they said.
For its part, the OHCHR expressed its deep solidarity with the family of the indigenous leader murdered by the invaders and with the Mayangna Sauni AS community “who, once again, suffers an armed attack in the context of defending their land.”
In addition, he urged the Ortega Murillo regime to “investigate, prosecute and punish whoever is responsible”.
The Ortega dictatorship has maintained a hermetic position on this situation, which not even with the resolutions of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights has caused the State to take action on the matter.
