The SEMM Mautone Sanatorium took another step in its development after inaugurating, on Saturday, April 22, a new surgical unit with greater capacity, comfort, safety, and better technology.
The director of the medical institution, Gustavo Rodríguez, pointed out that the new block increases the capacity of operating rooms by 50% and triples the general area.
“We had a surgical unit that was developed in an area of about 200 square meters and now we are in an area of more than 750. It is a project that between the design, the approvals and all the construction took more than a year and a half”, explained.
“This surgical block has all the circulation areas designed anew, which allow the flow of patients, of personnel, both medical and non-medical, to have their own circulations, preventing them from crossing each other,” said Rodríguez.
The director of the SEMM Mautone Sanatorium indicated that this results in greater security when it comes to preventing infections. “The rooms have a laminar flow system, which minimizes the risks of infections because it very strictly controls the amount of particles that can circulate in the air and it is the technology used for surgeries that require very high levels of asepsis, such as placement of prostheses, cardiac surgeries”, detailed.
In turn, all the equipment was updated, both surgical tables and surgical lights – those that illuminate the surgeon when operating. “All the anesthesia equipment and those required for many procedures, such as fiberoptic surgery, were also renewed,” Rodríguez indicated.

He explained that they increased the quality of the processes by improving circulation and increasing the size of the operating rooms. “We are working on the structure, on having a recovery area with a greater number of beds and an area for ambulatory surgery. We seek to work on quality, on the incorporation of technology and on patient safety”, explained the director of SEMM Mautone.
He added that this entire process was accompanied by the training of personnel in new techniques and in the review of all the care processes that are carried out in the surgical unit. “It is a question of accompanying the new physical space with a good training of the workers”.

Space, modernity, comfort. Characteristics of this new advance.
SEMM Mautone has already been performing highly complex surgeries, which it will now be able to perform with “better security measures and with better equipment and environment.” “The rooms are larger and more equipped than the ones we already had, in addition to increasing the number of rooms,” Rodríguez insisted.
The director of the institution asserted that the new surgical block and the entire sanatorium service will be available to all associates, “but we must remember that we do not serve only members, but rather, because of where we are located, we pay strong attention to tourism and we have agreements with institutions in Montevideo and the region”.

In addition to the directors of SEMM Mautone, government authorities such as Juan Pigola, interim mayor of Maldonado; Pablo García da Rosa, departmental director of Health of Maldonado; and Luis Eduardo Pereira, Secretary General of the Municipality of Maldonado, who made the inaugural ribbon cutting.
Rodríguez highlighted the commitment of all those involved and the importance of this new room. In turn, he took advantage of the instance to make public his gratitude to the officials and those responsible for the work, highlighting the complexity of carrying out the work “without affecting the operation of the sanatorium during the course of construction.”
