Cuba seizes more than 300 kilograms of drugs

(EFE).- The Cuban authorities dismantled a drug trafficking operation and seized more than 300 kilograms of marijuana, cocaine and amphetamine that entered the island by sea and air, according to a report from the Ministry of the Interior released this Sunday by state media.

There are currently 26 people involved who are accused as part of the investigation process of the case, according to a report which publishes the digital edition of the official newspaper Granma.

The Border Guard Troops had detected the entry to the island of 114.33 kilograms of marijuana in the coastal area of ​​the Bahía Honda municipality, in Artemisa, according to what Lieutenant Colonel Rigoberto Cordovés told Cuban television.

The route used to introduce the drug were people who acted as mules or mail, and that the General Customs of the Republic verified the presence of cocaine inside induction cookers and batteries of electric motorcycles that came in the name of people who were in charge of receiving this merchandise, extracting it and trading it, the official explained.

He also indicated that means of transportation such as speedboats, cars, electric motorcycles, and a firearm were confiscated.

The Government of Cuba assures that it maintains a policy of “zero tolerance” with drugs, applies strong sanctions to drug traffickers and provides its citizens with free treatment options for detoxification.

Havana is a signatory to the main multilateral legal instruments approved by the United Nations, including 11 extradition treaties, 34 legal assistance treaties, 42 drug treaties, and 31 sanctioned transfer treaties with other countries.

On the Island, drug trafficking is punishable by high sentences and even life imprisonment, and possession is also penalized, while consumers only receive fines and warnings when dealing with minimal doses for personal use.
