Body of migrant who perished 11 months ago in the Rio Grande is repatriated to Nicaragua

The body of the Nicaraguan migrant Lester Sotero Castillo Jarquinoriginally from the Capitán region, from the city of Boaco, arrives this Sunday, April 23, after spending more than 11 months in the Webb County morgue, in Laredo Texas.

The man from Boaqueño drowned on May 26, 2022, when he tried to cross the Rio Grande, along with four migrants, into US territory in search of better life opportunities.

The other nationals who died were Kelvin Antonio Torrez Medina, Jose Antonio Garcia Ramirez, Melvin Alexander Zelaya Hurtado and Carelia del Carmen Velasquez.

The news of the repatriation of the 28-year-old citizen was released by the organization Texas Nicaraguan Communitythrough its official page on the Facebook social network.

He explained that the body will be repatriated through an Avianca Cargo airline flight. “(…) At last he is going to rest in the land where he was born to the compatriot (…)”. He also described as a “terrible odyssey” the situation that the family of the young migrant went through so that the body could be delivered.

Although it had been known that the body of Castillo Jarquín was going to be repatriated at the end of last year, this was not possible since, according to TNC, the immigration authorities had requested the DNA of a brother of the deceased who is in the United States.

“In the end they delivered the body from December -2022- to the funeral home in the USA, with the Forensic report -but- without filling out the causes of death and without the coroner’s signature, for this reason the judge could not sign the death certificate”, explained the organization.

Ineffectiveness of Consul Samuel Trejos

Among other anomalies that they point out was “the insistence of the coroner, identified as “Dr. Sterm”, to work directly with samuel trejosNicaraguan consul in Texas, “and not with the families really interested in burying their relatives.”

Texas Nicaraguan Community insisted, once again, that Trejos is not fulfilling his duties to support Nicaraguans so that they can repatriate the bodies of their deceased relatives.

However, they stressed that after “so much paperwork and bureaucracy, his remains finally arrive – from Lester Castillo Jarquín -. His family came to think that he could no longer be repatriated, after 11 months, but at last the consolation of the family comes to be able to bury him in Nicaragua ».

On the other hand, they indicated that there are still two bodies of the Nicaraguans who perished along with Lester Casillo, since they affirm that their relatives are “in the harsh process of DNA comparison. Hoping that soon they can be returned to Nicaragua.

More than twenty Nicaraguans have perished in the waters of the Rio Grande, after seeking better life options in the United States. Many of the reasons for migration have been due to economic problems or political persecution at the hands of the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.

After the new immigration measures by the government of President Joe Biden, deaths, kidnappings, and extortion of migrants trying to reach North American lands have decreased.
