Mexico City, Mexico.-Surinam will once again request a visa for Cuban citizens, confirmed the Foreign Minister, Albert Ramdin. The measure will also affect another 20 nationalities.
On May 1st, the regulations that seek to stop the illegal migratory flow through this country will enter into force.
“The visa waiver is not being used for its intended purpose,” Ramdin stated. Initially, suppressing the visa was aimed at attracting more tourism and making the country more accessible to foreign investors. However, the authorities verified that many foreigners were using the norm for other purposes, EFE reported.
From now on, citizens of Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kenya, Ghana, Somalia, Cameroon, Ethiopia and Syria, among others, will need a visa.
Ramdin explained that when the government introduced the visa waiver, the goal was to get as many tourists as possible to Suriname and make the country more accessible to foreign investors.
“We don’t want problems with other countries, because we have become a conduit. We don’t want to be seen as a country that facilitates people smuggling and the illegal movement of people,” she added.
