The plenary of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) approved, this Tuesday (8), the formation of a new party, União Brasil, resulting from the merger between the DEM and the PSL. The approval, which was already expected, was unanimous.
With the merger, União Brasil immediately becomes the largest bench in the Chamber of Deputies, with 81 seats, and the PT, the second largest, with 53 parliamentarians. In this way, the new party is entitled, in theory, to the largest share of the Party Fund, something around R$ 160 million.
There may, however, be a significant migration of parliamentarians who are unhappy with the merger. For this, deputies must take advantage of the so-called party window, which allows, in a predetermined period of time before the elections for the Chamber, the change of acronym without loss of mandate. This year, the window will be open between March 3 and April 1.
In its statute, União Brasil declares itself “social liberal” and defends the role of the State as a “regulator” of the economy, focused on guaranteeing essential services to the population “such as health, education, security, freedom, housing and sanitation”.
