As a way of strengthening relations between the two nations and within the framework of the 95th anniversary of Her Majesty, Elisabeth II of the United Kingdom, the British Ambassador to Uruguay Faye O’Connor arrived in the departmental capital (Melo), where she was received by the Mayor José Yurramendi, the Director of International Relations Miguel Mestre and the President of the Board Maximiliano Abraham. The communal chief, when welcoming the illustrious visitor, recalled the close relationship that existed and still exists between the United Kingdom and our country; but highlighting the historical link between Cerro Largo and England. Yurramendi also reviewed the commercial ties that currently unite the two countries and that involve companies from Melo in various areas, such as meat, dairy, citrus, among others, emphasizing the environmental care. Ambassador Faye O’Connor thanked the reception given to her and reaffirmed the words of Mayor Yurramendi, highlighting the important place that the city of Melo occupies. At the same time, he valued the possibility of continuing to be partners, mainly in everything related to agriculture, promoting that it be more sustainable and based on this, international links are strengthened to place the products of the Uruguayan industry and British capital. The protocol ceremony concluded with an exchange of gifts between the Mayor and the diplomatic authority. During her presence, Faye O’Connor visited local institutions, ending with a tour of the Casa de Juana de Ibarbourou, the Union Club, the Cathedral, among other historical sites.
The ambassador of the United Kingdom in Uruguay, Faye O’Connor, also visited some centers that teach languages to meet the students in English Language and Bilingual Intercultural Education (MELBE). Teachers were present at the meeting.
During her visit, the diplomat shared a coffee break with the students and talked with them about the new academic proposal. Throughout the exchange, she highlighted the importance of the existence of this type of program that promotes the professionalization of English language teaching and trains teachers who will be agents of change in society. In particular, she highlighted the link that exists between Uruguay and the embassy in terms of agreements between educational institutions of both countries and the possibilities of establishing new connections that allow further progress in the training and updating of Uruguayan teachers.
