A problem that has been in the territory for years and to which “no one attends” is the suicides in the Embera community in Chocó.
News Colombia.
The dramatic situation suffered by young people in the Embera del Chocó community requires attention, suicide is being the way out of their precarious living conditions, they denounce.
So far this year 2023, there are already 17 young people between the ages of 12 and 28 who have taken their own lives.
“The youth of Chocó are going through a serious situation throughout the department and it is the issue of suicide, we have already had 17 cases in 6 municipalities, the worst of all is that they are not being registered,” said Ilsa Banuvi, an Embera indigenous leader.
This is due to the difficulties that this population has in accessing health services and the reporting route is unknown or cannot be used, either due to communication or connectivity problems.
There are two causal factors in the situation of young Embera regarding the decision to commit suicide: the armed conflict and the humanitarian crisis.
“These two factors have generated a total disconnection with Mother Nature, the weakening of our spirituality, we Emberas are very spiritual people and as a result, cultural uprooting,” said Banuvi.
For its part, the Ombudsman’s Office is already aware of the situation, but it is not enough.
That is why this Embera del Chocó community calls on the National Government to take a look at the population and youth in the face of this crisis without mourners.
A dramatic situation is registered with the Embera community in Chocó as a consequence of the suicide of several boys of this ethnic group. 17 young people between the ages of 12 and 28 have taken their own lives so far this year.
