Despite the time remaining for the next presidential elections in the United States, the electoral campaign is taking shape. The most striking is the confrontation between former president Donald Trump and the governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis.
The former president already has the support of eight Florida congressmen in Washington, and the governor with just one congresswoman. The curious thing is that with the shift to the right in Florida, none of the congressmen who have already pledged to support it are Cuban-American.
“If we want to get our economy back on track, Donald Trump is the right guy to do it,” Vern Buchanan, the second-in-command of the Florida House delegation said Wednesday hours after the former president himself called him personally to ask for your support.
In his fight for the Republican nomination, Trump had managed to win the public support of seven members of Florida’s congressional delegation in Washington. Last week, representatives Greg Steube and John Rutherford formally endorsed the candidate. They would later be joined by Congressman Brian Mast.
DeSantis announced Tuesday the endorsement of Republican Rep. Laurel Lee, his only endorsement thus far.
DeSantis is expected to launch his career after the legislative session in Florida. Despite the fact that the current governor is in second position in the polls, he still has a long way to go before he can compete with Trump in the party’s primaries, to be held between February and June 2024.
One of his pitfalls is that although he has solid support in Florida, DeSantis has not won the support of Republican leaders, starting with the leader of the Senate in Washington, Mitch McConnell, and that of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy.
