They report another femicide: Subject beats his partner to death in Muelle de los Bueyes

femicidio Nicaragua

One more femicide was reported this Tuesday, April 18, in Nicaragua. With this case, the number of women murdered by sexist violence in this country rises to 22. “It is an epidemic, violence against women does not seem to stop,” say feminist activists in the country.

The new victim of femicide is Yelba del Carmen Zamorán, 30, who was beaten to death by her partner José Luis Urbina, also 30. It was learned that the woman was pregnant and was three months pregnant.

The crime occurred in the house of the victim’s mother, located in the 27 de Julio neighborhood, near the municipal flea market of Muelle de Los Bueyes, a town in the South Caribbean of Nicaragua.

According to the account of Yelba Mercedes’ relatives, she had decided to end the relationship she had with José Luis, because she could no longer bear “his violent and controlling personality.” Since the woman was not willing to continue the relationship, the man hit her on the head with a piece of wood and left her lying on the ground. The man fled the scene after committing the crime.

So far, the police authorities have not provided further information on the case.

Only in this month of April, at least six women, including Yelba Zamorán, have lost their lives violently at the hands of their executioners, who have been partners or ex-partners of the victims.

Cards do not solve femicides

For their part, feminist organizations have denounced that the primers promoted by the Vice President of Nicaragua, Rosario Murillo, have not reduced femicides, for what they called the regime to create serious educational campaigns for the prevention of violence against women.

“More than anything, the background of this (booklet against femicides) is always a political opportunity, a political propaganda from the government, making visible a serious situation that exists in Nicaragua, such as the femicides that are increasing every day. It is shocking to see the colors of the card and at the end the photo of Rosario Murillo,” a lawyer, sociologist and feminist said for this report on condition of anonymity.

The feminist lawyer considered that the primer is exclusive, because the regime makes available to the “victims” online sites and telephone numbers to report the violence they receive from their executioners and many do not even have access to the internet , no money for phone recharges.

“Specifically from this primer on femicide prevention we find several elements that we say is not enough to eradicate femicides. Number one; it does not have a gender, protection and human rights approach towards women, rather it has a familial approach or family reintegration or avoiding the separation of the family “at the expense of”, or responsibility falling on women to end the violence of which they are victims,” he explained.
