New York mayor calls for TPS to be provided to migrants before Title 42 expires

Eric Adams, mayor of New York, United States (USA), once again requested President Joe Biden to facilitate the TPS work permit for thousands of migrants who arrived in the North American country, which until last March cost the city 817 Millions of dollars in services. According to the mayor, some 1,400 migrants are arriving in the city every week

Eric Adams, mayor of New York, United States (USA), reiterated this Wednesday, April 19, an urgent call to President Joe Biden to provide “immediately” the TPS (Temporary Protected Status) work permit for thousands of migrants who They arrived in the North American country, and massively in New York in the last year, seeking asylum in the country; when Title 42 is about to expire.

The burgomaster requests in particular that a redefinition of the TPS be made and extend the period of validity, for Venezuela, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Sudan, South Sudan, Cameroon and other African countries; something that can be achieved only with the Biden signature.

He also called on the Biden Administration to expand access to humanitarian parole for them and increase the number of US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) agents and reassign them to reduce application processing times.

Humanitarian parole, which can be granted for urgent medical or humanitarian reasons and other emergencies, is often a “last chance” to gain entry to the United States for those who are otherwise ineligible for a visa.

Migrants and Title 42

Title 42 is a health regulation imposed by the Donald Trump Administration, which is currently maintained, which allows migrants of certain nationalities who arrive at the border to be expelled to Mexico, without giving them the opportunity to request asylum.

According to the mayor, some 1,400 migrants are arriving in the city every week. So far, at least 52,000 people have been received, many families with children, and more than 34,000 are in public shelters, as well as hotels that the city has had to contract, to which it also provides meals, as well as other services to through NGOs.

“Thousands of people are waiting to cross the border and potentially end up in New York, so 52,000 may move to 100,000,” he stated, reiterating that they have not “heard of a real White House plan” for when Title 42 expires. .

“Untenable”

“We need Washington to respond,” Adams said, assuring that “the president and the White House have failed New York City on this issue” of migrants.

Adams also announced that until March 31 the city had spent $817 million in services to newcomers.

The city expects to spend $1.4 billion in fiscal year 2023 and $2.9 billion in 2024. The Adams Administration says it is an “unsustainable” tax burden that puts pressure on the city budget and puts funding for programs and services at risk that benefit New Yorkers.

Some 87,390 migrants crossed the Darien jungle, a dangerous passage between Panama and Colombia, during the first three months of 2023. Venezuelans represented 34.61% (30,250) of the people who transited this migratory route, used as part of the transit to the United States; according to a report released by the National Migration Service (SNM) of Panama.
