Increase in suicides in the country worry mental health professionals

In recent weeks, four people, all young, decided to commit suicide for different reasons and in different parts of the country, in very particular circumstances that are still being investigated by the competent bodies.

The deceased were aged 15, 19, 20 and 24, and were from the departments of Madriz, Matagalpa and Jinotega. This is a public health problem and, therefore, it is the responsibility of the Ministry of Health (Minsa) to take preventive measures to prevent these unfortunate events from continuing to occur, experts said.

“Suicide is not only about the direct and unique action of the individual, but it is the result of many actions in the environment of the person who chooses to end their existence in this world,” said the psychologist. Agustin Lopez Juarez.

He explained that “the person’s environment, his own personality, the indifference of family members and the abandonment of the State with its absence of serious public policies to mitigate this problem, are generally the reasons why there are so many kids thinking that the The only path left for him is this one.”

Meanwhile, a clinical psychologist, a former employee of the Nicaraguan public health system, expressed that suicide wishes are the same regardless of the person’s sex. “There are studies in Nicaragua that show that it is even men who make attempts on their lives more frequently than women and the most likely to attempt it, they are mostly adolescents. Be careful with that data, because where you should start doing something is with the kids, “warned the expert.

Lack of prevention strategies

«In the world there has been no progress in the prevention of suicide. Governments do not seem to care, because data from the World Health Organization (WHO) indicate that suicide is among the top ten causes of death in the world and in Nicaragua, this problem is growing,” he warned.

In numbers, suicide cases are horrifying: according to the WHO, almost one million people in the world die by suicide every year, that is equivalent to one death every 40 seconds.

Suicide represents almost 2% of deaths worldwide and that means that it is among the 20 causes of mortality. Psychological experts believe that since governments don’t do much, at home families could do something.

“An attempt can be made to identify danger signs at home, for example, if the boy or girl shows a certain and constant dissatisfaction with what happens at home, at school, or around them,” said the clinical psychologist.

According to the psychologist Agustín López, another warning sign is the words that the potential suicide usually uses. «Most say «that life is not worth living», «what I would like is to die», «to live in this way, the best thing is to be dead», and so on. So, there you have to act », he recommended.
