The Nunca Más Nicaragua Human Rights Collective denounced that five years after the civic rebellion of 2018, the Daniel Ortega regime has intensified the repression against opponents.

He also pointed out that the Ortega administration, together with its operators, “has restricted the freedom of the Nicaraguan people and has exiled and stripped of their nationality more than 316 people.”

«In April 2018, the Nicaraguan people, its youth and most sectors of the country carried out a legitimate and civic popular protest never seen before in Nicaragua. Faced with these massive demonstrations, the Ortega Murillo regime ordered to go with everything, prescribing jail, exile or cemetery, also committing crimes against humanity that still remain in impunity, “he recalled.

He emphasized that instead of stopping his repressive wave against Nicaraguans, the dictator Daniel Ortega has impeded religious freedom and keeps more than 40 political prisoners behind bars, including Monsignor Rolando Alvarez, Bishop of the Diocese of Matagalpa.

Selective arrests continue

On the other hand, the agency indicated that it has received information that in recent days there have been selective arrests, which “have not been made public due to the fear that families experience in the face of a wave of repression, arbitrary and without any type of guarantees.” .

“These arrests follow the pattern of persecuting relatives of political prisoners, journalists, opponents, human rights defenders, artists, religious people and citizens who think and want a different Nicaragua,” he added.

The Collective also demanded the immediate release of the political prisoners, the cessation of the harassment, harassment and intimidation of their relatives, since they affirm that “the only thing they ask for is their right to true justice, reparation and non-repetition”.

He also demanded the repeal of the repressive and unconstitutional laws that “want to silence the voice of a people that continues in resistance, to live in freedom.”

At the same time, it demanded the return to the country of the missions of the IACHR, the Meseni and the OHCHR, as well as the entry of the mechanism of the group of experts for Nicaragua of the United Nations in order to carry out the investigation work on the violations to the human rights committed against Nicaraguans.

“We join the call of the Nicaraguan people who fight for justice and the preservation of historical memory. The time will come to account for all the crimes against humanity that have remained unpunished up to now,” he concluded.
