Recognize a counterfeit bill
The Central Bank of Ecuador (BCE) issued advice on the security features of the banknotes circulating in the country, in this case, the identification of allegedly adulterated series of five-dollar bills. It should be noted that the falsity of a ticket can be determined by a set of characteristics that citizens must know to avoid being surprised.
Regarding the numbering of the series, the following should be considered:
- On the front of a banknote of any denomination (where the character is) the serial number appears both in the upper left (above the Federal Reserve System shield), and in the lower right. Both numbers must be exactly the same. On some counterfeit bills, this serial number is different between the one on the right and the one on the left.
- The serial number contains a total of 11 alphanumeric characters (letters and numbers) in the following order: two letters, eight numbers, and one letter.
- The second letter of the bill series must coincide with the first letter of the alphanumeric code that appears located below the series, on the left side of the back. These alphanumeric codes are 12: A1, B2, C3, D4, E5, F6, G7, H8, I9, J10, K11 and L12. Example: If the serial number is MF95849386C, the second letter – in this case it is F – must also appear in the code below the series, which is F6.
- When you feel the bill in the area of the character’s suit, you should feel a high relief.
- The banknotes are made from a mixture of cotton (75%) and linen (25%), the paper money is consistent, not smooth or too rough.
- The paper money is consistent, not smooth nor too rough.
- It has a watermark consisting of a large, faint image of the bill number on the far right of the bill. In the case of banknotes issued after 2008, there is also another watermark made up of three 5 numbers in a column, which are to the left of the character’s face. They can be seen against the light.
- There is a security thread on the right side of the character. This is an embedded plastic band that reads USA 5 several times and if the bill is passed under ultraviolet light, this thread turns light blue.
- The character’s costume has high relief and is scratchy.
- Microprints should be noted for sharpness.
- It has quality in the colors, that is, they are vivid colors. Sharpness is observed in the features of the character on the bill.
