Jornales Solidarios will be extended until 2024

Government defines term and quantity

The Congress of Mayors agreed with the Executive Party last Thursday to extend the Solidarity Days until the year 2024, inclusive, reported the newspaper El País and confirmed Montevideo Portal with government sources. This Thursday the table of the Congress of Mayors made up of Fernando Echeverría (Flores), Andrés Lima (Salto) and Richard Sander (Rivera) will hold a meeting with Secretary of the Presidency, Álvaro Delgado, in order to determine the details to extend for two years the Job Opportunity plan. Authorities from the National Civil Service Office, the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, and the Ministry of Economy and Finance will also participate in the instance.

The mayor of Salto told Montevideo Portal that the agreement reached with the Executive Branch was “resolved now” so that “it would not be tied to political issues and the 2024 electoral campaign.”

In the agreement reached, it was established that the project that must be submitted to Parliament contemplates the same conditions for the two years, so as not to require new semi-annual extensions as has happened since the Solidarity Wages began to be implemented.

Although it remains for the Executive to define the term and number of workers that the program will cover, in any case, the mayors of the interior assume that the program will have its fourth edition in 2024.

In the meeting with Delgado, the amount of solidarity wages for the 2023 edition and the remuneration will be finalized.

In 2022, the last extension of the Jornales Solidarios was financed 75% by the national government and 25% by each departmental administration.

As reported by Lima to Montevideo PortalIn principle, the Executive’s proposal is that by 2023 and 2024 the national government finances 70% and the rest the municipalities.

At the beginning of this year, it was reported that, after its completion in December 2022, the Jornales Solidarios in 2023 would resume in May. (Montevideo Portal)
