Disapproval in Peru of President Dina Boluarte exceeds 70%

77% of Peruvians disapprove of Boluarte, the first woman to govern Peru and who replaced the leftist Pedro Castillo in power, in the midst of a political crisis that led to protests with more than 50 deaths in clashes with the public force.a

Boluarte, 60, began his term with a disapproval rate of 68%, as a result of the repression of the demonstrations that demanded immediate elections and the closure of Congress.

In April his approval was 15%, two points less than in March and the lowest level in his administration. The remaining 8% of those surveyed did not specify their answer, according to Ipsos.

Boluarte was vice president of Pedro Castillo, dismissed by the conservative Congress on December 7 after his failed coup. The 53-year-old ex-president is serving preventive detention, waiting for justice to decide his eventual call for trial.

Ipsos pointed out that “the approval (of Boluarte) has fallen 6 points since the December 2023 measurement,” when the first poll was carried out with Boluarte in power.

The perception that “it does nothing to improve the economic situation of the country” (45%) and the deaths in the protests (38%), are the main reasons for their disapproval, according to the firm of opinion studies.

Due to the protests, the prosecutor’s office is investigating the president for the alleged crimes of “genocide, qualified homicide and serious injuries.” However, she has immunity until her term ends in July 2026.

Congress is also in the doldrums: 84% disapprove, two points more than in March, and 10% approve.

Ipsos consulted 1,207 Peruvians in the main cities of the country. The poll’s margin of error is 2.8%.
