Cuban pitcher Yosimar Cousín signs with the Chicago White Sox

MADRID, Spain.- Cuban pitcher Yosimar Cousín, who left Cuba last year, received a contract offer with the Chicago White Sox for two years.

The news was released this Monday by sports journalist Francys Romero.

Through the social network Twitter Romero specified that a physical examination of the 25-year-old West Indian is pending in the coming days, so that the contract, which amounts to 2 million dollars, is finalized.

In the structure of the agreement to be made official, there is an option in 2025, which would be activated if Cousín reaches MLB and will receive an extra payment of 1.2 million. If he doesn’t make a team in 2025, then he’ll get $625,000 in the minor leagues, the reporter said.

Cousín is a potential starter at 92-95 mph, and an above-average slider, Romero noted.

As stated by the media Cuban ball, Yosimar Cousín will be assigned to the Minor Leagues between the Class-A advanced and Double-A levels once this contract is made official. To gain pitching volume and adapt to professional baseball before he makes the leap to the Big Top.

Yosimar Cousín, a native of Camagüey, left Cuba in January 2022 together with the pitcher Yunior Tur heading to the Dominican Republic. The Cuban sports authorities had prohibited both of them from participating in the Under 23 World Cup held in Mexico due to “ideological problems.”

Established in the Central American country, they continued training. Cousín did it at the academy of Professor Yuan Pino, who has worked with numerous Cuban prospects currently playing in the professional league. Yunior Tur from Santiago has already signed with the Oakland Athletics.

In Cuba Yosimar Cousín played six National Series (2015-2021) and went through the ranks of Holguín, Pinar del Río and Las Tunas as a reinforcement. He was also a member of Team Cuba several times, such as the one that intervened in the Premier 12, in 2019.
