One of the greatest black leaders in Maranhão died this Saturday (15): Adalberto Conceição da Silva, better known as Mestre Zumbi Bahia. The death of the capoeira master, singer, composer, choreographer, percussionist and master of Education Sciences was informed by the Center for Black Culture of Maranhão (CCN-MA).
So far, the reason for Mestre Zumbi Bahia’s death has not been disclosed. “It is with regret that we received the news of the passing of our companion Adalberto da Conceição Silva, our Mestre Zumbi Bahia. Respected and applauded for his accomplishments, Zumbi Bahia leaves a significant legacy in Afro-Brazilian art and culture, especially in Maranhão”, reported CCN, in a note posted on social media.
“The Centro de Cultura Negra do Maranhão expresses gratitude and tributes for its contribution in Akomabu, in Abanjá and sympathizes with family and friends. ‘I bathe in the forces that come from the infinitive! Crossing the barriers of the Sun’. Be at peace Zumbi Bahia! May the Orum receive you in celebration!”, completes the note.
In another post, CCN thanks the master for the teachings; by the “cultural hums”; as well as for the ginga, struggle, character, “and for having made us understand the greatness of being black… black! For making us respect our ancestry, our religion and our culture. Eternally our gratitude “, says the text.
Eradicated in São Luís (MA), Zumbi Bahia created the Coletivo Cultural Oficina Afro. His artistic career began with the group Filhos de Obá, in Salvador (BA). In Maranhão, he was the Pedagogical Coordinator of the Officina Affro Institute.
