The Iranian police announced the entry into force from this Saturday, April 15, of new measures to control the use of the veil and force women to respect the mandatory hijab in the country since the Islamic revolution of 1979.

According to Iranian police officials, new surveillance cameras will make it possible to identify women who do not respect the veil on the street, in the car or in shopping malls. These new technologies will not make mistakes, the police chief said on Friday.

A photo of the unveiled women will be taken on the spot and sent by SMS message with a warning message.

In case of recurrence, these women of Iran they will go to court and will have to pay a penalty, they will be deprived of certain social services, or they will be prevented from leaving the country. The cars of women who do not wear headscarves may also be impounded for several weeks.

Similarly, restaurants, cafes or shops whose employees do not respect the veil could be closed.

After the death in September 2022 of Mahsa Amini, arrested by the public order police for not respecting the veil, a growing number of women decide not to wear this garment on the street in protest. The deputy prosecutor of Iran, the country he presides over Ebrahim Raisi, announced that those who encourage women to remove their headscarves could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.

A week ago, Iran’s police chief, Ahmad-Reza Radan, said that people who remove their hijab in public places will first receive a warning and then be brought to court,” Radan warned. In addition, vehicle owners will also receive a warning message if any passenger violates the dress code. The owner risks having his car repossessed in case of a repeat offense, Radan said.
