“It is demanding but it must be done, Chile needs it”: Government and Congress sign an agreement to speed up 31 security projects

From the former National Congress, the Government and the presidents of Parliament announced the signing of the security agreement, which will launch the discussion of 31 projects that seek to better face the current situation that the country is going through in this matter.

Specifically, the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, together with the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Vlado Mirosevic (PL), and the leader of the Senate, Juan Antonio Coloma (UDI), valued the scope of the pact, generated after arduous political conversations between the opposition and the ruling party.

In this sense, the head of the Interior stated that “on behalf of the Executive we give the greatest value to this agreement that we have reached”, highlighting in turn that “it is also an agreement between representatives of the ruling party and the opposition.”

For his part, the president of the Upper House indicated that “what we are doing here is committing ourselves, and we must do it, to face this issue, and although suddenly one can be criticized, we must be quick and more urgent in this type of legislation. That is why we have agreed on these 31 projects that are going to be specially considered”.

“It means that apart from their processing, obviously this does not mean that there are no other issues that Congress sees, but the important thing here is that these 31 issues are going to have urgent, special and committed treatment so that they can be dispatched in the indicated periods. It is demanding but you have to do it, Chile needs it,” he added.

Meanwhile, the helmsman of the Chamber of Deputies specified that “in both chambers there are many initiatives in parallel to take charge of the security issue, what had to be done was to order and prioritize them. And we have then reached this text of 31 projects that We hope they will be laws of the Republic as soon as possible”.

“Of course, this is going to mean that we have to call special sessions, where Congress is going to have to vote more laws and faster. There is an absolute willingness on our part for this to be the case, for this agenda to move forward as soon as possible, because We feel that people have every right to demand that we stop fighting,” added Mirosevic.

It should be noted that among the 31 outstanding projects, the representatives of the Executive and Legislature revealed that the initiatives are in search of the money route of various criminal organizations, granting greater powers to the Internal Revenue Service (SII) and Customs. To do this, lifting the bank secrecy.

They also made reference to the law on economic crimes, which allows the criminal liability of legal persons to be expanded; the law that typifies the crime of possession of technological elements in prisons, better known as the Anti-Cell Phone Law, and others regarding financial intelligence to go after criminal gangs, among others.

Annoyance of the president of the Lower House by letter from deputies RN

Prior to the announcement of the security agreement between the Executive and the Legislature, the National Renewal (RN) bench of deputies accused that the different parliamentary committees of the Corporation were not consulted before the announcement was made. They assured that they found out “through the press.”

In this sense, the leader of the Chamber of Deputies, Vlado Mirosevic (PL), called for a willingness to “dialogue” and not to “boycott” the effort made to materialize the agreement.

“What we are doing with the President of the Senate and the Minister of the Interior is a prioritization of projects, someone has to do this exercise, we need the high processing that exists in different commissions to have a certain order. What we are doing it is to put order and priorities in the security agenda, if someone thinks that is wrong, I sincerely tell them: why?” Mirosevic lamented.

In this sense, the liberal deputy assured that in said list “there is everything, projects of the Government, of the opposition, of the ruling party, all together as a national task, that is what it is about. I would only call for there to be a real readiness for dialogue and let’s not boycott an effort that is national”.

“There has to be a good disposition from left to right for this to come out, it cannot be done if there is no good faith and there is no willingness to dialogue,” concluded the president of the Chamber of Deputies and Deputies, Vlado Mirosevic.
