Three arrested for torturing women and children in a sect in Bocas del Toro

The Bocas del Toro Regional Prosecutor’s Office, through the Homicide and Femicide Specialized Section, has arrested three people allegedly linked to the crime against Life and Personal Integrity for events recorded on Peterson Island, Kusapín, in the Ngäbe Buglé region, in detriment of 5 people, including three minors and two women, who have multiple injuries from blows and burns and who are confined in a hospital.

Staff from the Bocas del Toro Prosecutor’s Office moved to the scene after initiating an ex officio investigation before the report of the admission of the injured to the Chiriquí Grande hospital on Thursday afternoon, April 13, 2023 and with the support of the National Aeronaval Service (SENAN), another 19 people were evacuated today, who are being taken for evaluation by the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences to establish other possible victims.

According to the first procedures carried out, it is a fact recorded during the performance of a ritual in which some 50 people participated, members of an alleged sect.

These three people will be taken by the Prosecutor’s Office before the Guarantee Court for the legalization of the arrests, the imputation of charges and the application of precautionary measures.

The Superior Prosecutor of Bocas del Toro, Julio Vergara, does not rule out new apprehensions as a result of the events recorded on Peterson Island and indicated that the development of the investigations will determine the precise number of victims.
