INDH calls on “all State powers and agencies” so that the project on the Rules of Use of Force becomes law

The National Institute of Human Rights (INDH) called on all State powers to approve the draft Law on the Rules for the Use of Force (RUF). The foregoing, as one of the responses to the security situation in the country.

In this regard, the director of the organization, Consuelo Contreras, assured that “it is urgent to convert the Rules of the Use of Force into law” in the face of the escalation of violence that “has intensified to levels that were not appreciated in Chile decades ago.”

As for the bill, recently entered into Congress by the Executive Branch, the INDH called on “all State powers and agencies to legislate and also to act in accordance with human rights standards, in order to protect not only individuals , but to those who have the monopoly of force by mandate of the laws”.

For this reason – they warn – “it is urgent to convert into law the Rules of the Use of Force (RUF), a matter that the INDH has been asking for for years.” Likewise, they request that “with urgency, not only must legislate around the powers of the police, but also provide them with the necessary material for their work.”

“They must have adequate working conditions, security tools and training to deal with lawbreakers and new ways of committing crimes,” concluded the agency’s director, Consuelo Contreras.
