A young woman is murdered in Jesús María: There have been 23 femicides in Cuba so far in 2023

Jesús María, Feminicidio

MIAMI, United States. – The Gender Observatory of the magazine taut wings and the feminist platform YoSíTeCreo in Cuba confirmed the murder of a young woman in the early hours of this Sunday, April 9, in the Jesús María neighborhood, in Old Havana.

The young woman, whose name and age were not disclosed, was killed by her partner. So far this year, 16 women have been murdered by their partners or ex-partners on the Island.

“Several sources indicate that the attacker took the victim to the nearby polyclinic, but it was too late. These facts seem to have been crossed by situations of pimping and sex trafficking, which involve internal migrants, for which reason they require an exhaustive police investigation,” explained YoSíTeCreo in Cuba.

With this crime, the number of victims of femicide on the island rises to 23, only so far in 2023. However, the figure must be considered an underreporting, since the Cuban State does not regularly publish statistics on cases of sexist violence extreme on the island.

In the first 10 days of April alone, four women have been killed in femicide attacks.

Last Sunday, April 2, Rosa Amelia Sotolongo, 22, was murdered by her partner and father of her youngest son in the house where they both lived, in the town of Aguada de Pasajeros, Cienfuegos.

Just three days later, independent feminist platforms confirmed a double feminicide occurred in the rural neighborhood of El Pesquero, in the municipality of Cacocum, Holguín.

So far, in 13 of the 15 provinces of the country, at least one femicide has been reported during 2023. With the murder of the young woman in the Jesús María neighborhood, there are three fatalities of gender violence in Havana.

These data should be understood as underreporting: we do not know how many women have died from gender-related issues in Cuba. The Government does not make the statistics transparent nor does it usually tell the stories of the victims.
