Energy demand registers four historical records in less than 15 days

In less than fifteen days, the demand for electrical energy in Panama has recorded four historical records, an unprecedented situation, but one that should not cause alarm or concern, assured the general manager of the Electric Transmission Company, Carlos Mosquera Castillo.

The ETESA manager explained that the demand records -which in previous years only recorded one per year and had been in the month of May- were: on Monday, March 27, 2023 of 2,059 MW, followed on Tuesday, April 4, which for the first time on the same day there were two demand peaks of 2,078 MW and then 2,079 MW, and finally on Wednesday, April 5, it reached 2,090 MW.

Eng. Mosquera clarified that the increase in demand does not translate into an increase in the price of electricity and recalled that the installed capacity of the country’s energy matrix is almost double the demand, for which there are no reasons – right now – to consider rationing, although as always urges consumers to make responsible use of electricity.

“The factors that affect the increase in energy demand are multiple. Productive, industrial, commercial activities, domestic consumption, and the use of refrigeration systems continue to increase in direct proportion to the dynamism of the economy, therefore, demand will continue to increase”, indicated the ETESA manager.

The previous maximum peaks in electricity consumption in previous years were on May 4, 2022 of 2,031 MW and on May 20, 2021, of 2,020 MW.
