After an accelerated process in Congress, this morning the so-called Nain-Retamal Law was published, a norm that merged two bills aimed at protecting police work. The current Law No. 21,560 was promulgated by the President gabriel boric last Thursday, a day that was marked by the death of Corporal Daniel Palma: the third police officer killed on the job in less than a month.
The publication establishes greater protection for officials of the Carabineros, Gendarmerie, Investigative Police (PDI) and the aeronautical and maritime police, increasing the penalties for those who attack these officials.

The Undersecretary of the Interior, Manuel Monsalve, assured that the rule may be applied retroactively. Therefore, this could be applied in the cases of the policemen who died in recent weeks: Álex Salazar, Rita Olivares and Daniel Palma.
Together with Nº 21,560, the Executive enacted three other laws that are also aimed at reinforcing work against crime: the Law No. 21,555 that reinforces the powers of the Gendarmerie and creates the crime of extortion, the Law 21,557 that modifies the criminal code to aggravate the penalty for the crime of kidnapping; and the Law 21,556 that increases the penalty for the crime of carrying weapons in highly crowded places.
