What is celebrated on April 19?

The Landing of the Thirty-Three Orientals is commemorated on the Agraciada beach, which took place in 1825.

This event was a key moment in the fight for the independence of Uruguay. A group of patriots led by Juan Antonio Lavalleja disembarked on the Agraciada beach. to join the forces fighting for the independence of the territory.

“What would later be called the ‘Cruzada Libertadora’ then began its march, fanning out over eastern territory. They were presided over by a flag with the Artiguista colors. The harangue that Lavalleja addressed to them, calling them Argentine-Orientals, was ‘Let’s show the whole world that we deserve to be free,'” says the website of the Presidency.

The landing of the Treinta y Tres Orientales was the beginning of a series of battles that culminated in the Uruguayan victory at the Battle of Cerrito in 1827 and finally with the country’s independence in 1828. For this reason, April 19 is considered the Landing Day of the Thirty-Three Orientals and is a national holiday in Uruguay.

When does the April 19 holiday move to?

The day falls on Wednesday and runs to Monday the 17th. As stipulated by law, those non-working holidays that fall between Tuesday or Wednesday, to generate long weekends and promote tourism, are moved to the next. If they occur on Thursday or Friday, they are moved to the following Monday.

The same happens with the one on Thursday, May 18 (Batalla de Las Piedras) that runs to Monday the 22nd and Thursday, October 12 (Día de la Raza) that runs to Monday the 16th.
