The XXIII International Biennial of graphic humor takes place from this Sunday in Cuba, with a wide program of activities.

The humorous event, which will last until next Wednesday, April 12, will have the Cuban capital and the town of San Antonio de los Baños, the traditional venue for the event.

National and foreign comedians and cartoonists participate in the Biennial, which on this occasion is dedicated to the role of art in the face of patriarchal discrimination and gender violence, under the slogan “Seriously laugh at machismo.”

In addition, during its sessions the use of inclusive language and the empowerment of women will be addressed, in accordance with a report from the agency Latin Press (PL)which does not specify the number of participants.

Organized by the Union of Cuban Journalists and the Museum of Humor of San Antonio de los Baños, with the co-sponsorship of the Artemisa Provincial Directorate of Culture, the event opened with the creation of an allegorical mural to the Biennial in the so-called Parque del Humor, and with its traditional inaugural parade in the town of Artemisa.

The program of the event includes artistic presentations, the collective exhibition of the Jury —which on this occasion is chaired by the Cuban artist Adan Iglesias— and the Exhibition Hall of the XXIII Biennial, as well as the exhibition “Breaking the rules”, by Yanely Rodríguez and the workshop “Laugh without being sexist in the attempt”, review PL.

Similarly, there will be panels such as “Humor and Political Communication in the 21st Century”, book presentations and exhibitions dedicated to figures such as humorists Manuel, Ares, Miriam, the well-known publication melaíto and Francisco Villamil on his 80th birthday, among others.

Since its foundation, the Biennial “is open to all graphic humorists, who can compete in the categories General Humor, Political Satire, Humorous Cartoon, Personal Caricature and Humorous Photography,” recalls the news office.

The collateral and official prizes of the International Salon will be delivered on the conclusive day of the event, in San Antonio de los Baños.

At the closing ceremony itself, the Tomy Prize for political humor will also be awarded, in homage to Cuban cartoonist Tomás Rodríguez Zayas, who would turn 74 in 2023, and the Eduardo Abela Prize, the contest’s highest award, which consists of an accrediting diploma, trophy and monetary backing.
