Venezuelans continue to lead the great migrations of the Americas, says IOM

Costa Rica will allow migratory passage of Venezuelans and humanitarian attention

The IOM report found that for Venezuelan nationals, economic reasons remain “the main reason for leaving.”


The Regional Office of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for South America presented its most recent February 2023 report on recent trends in migration in the Americas; in which they affirm that “Venezuelans are the ones who have a leading role in the great movements of the Americas, driven by the complex situation in their country of origin and in transit countries.”

Other nationalities that represented large migratory movements during 2022 and early 2023 are Haitians, Cubans, Nicaraguans, and Ecuadorians; who go with the idea of ​​crossing to the United States to fulfill the American dream.

During January and February of this year, 18,000 Venezuelans and 12,000 Ecuadorian nationals entered Panama on a regular basis, mainly from air entry points, the report says.

Similarly, the International Organization for Migration indicates that in January 20% of residences registered in Brazil corresponded to Venezuelan nationals; while Uruguay recorded the highest migratory balance in the last five years, also with a preponderance of Venezuelans.

Between January and March of this 2023, the authorities of Panama said that 78,585 migrants have transited irregularly; being the majority (25,666) Venezuelans21,804 Haitians and 13,842 Ecuadorians.

Some 6,000 Venezuelans in shelters in Colombia

The report also reflects that 5,938 Venezuelans were in 18 shelters in Colombian territory until December 2022 and that there was a decrease compared to December 2021, when 9,117 Venezuelans were counted in 28 shelters.

“According to official data, in 2022, 454,000 Venezuelans entered Colombia and 424,000 left through official border points, which represents a total increase of about 60% in one year,” the document reads.

The IOM report found that for Venezuelan nationals, the economic reasons they remain “the main reason for leaving.”
