Mexico City, Mexico.-A total of 3,093 migrants trying to reach the United States have been returned to Cuba so far this year, the Ministry of the Interior (Minint) reported this Saturday, according to a reference the EFE agency.
The most recent of these operations occurred this Friday when the United States Coast Guard Service handed over 48 Cubans -42 men and six women, mostly from Havana and Camagüey- who left illegally by sea. This is the 54th repatriation operation from countries in the area carried out in 2023.
According to the official source, the state that returns the most cuban migrants is United States. In just 13 weeks, that country has returned 2,260 Cubans. Other countries such as Mexico, the Bahamas and the Cayman Islands also return nationals who arrived illegally on their lands.
After the implementation of the Program of Humanitarian Parolewhich Washington announced at the beginning of 2023, the passage through the Mexican border closed, while the “Dry feet, wet feet” policy that facilitated the arrival of rafters, was repealed in the Barack Obama administration.
Yet in the past six months, the US Coast Guard has intercepted 6,202 rafters. According to official data, this figure exceeds that of the entire previous year, which was 6,182.
This parole program is committed to welcoming 30,000 migrants from Venezuela, Haiti, Cuba and Nicaragua every month. In the case of Cuba, some 14,000 Cubans have benefited from this initiative, according to the State Department.
