Orange Alert in the Nevado del Ruiz Volcano continues: Geological Service monitors, asks for calm and follow instructions

They reported that the Orange Alert will be maintained for several weeks, they will monitor if there is any acceleration that suggests an imminent eruption or the eruption itself and the level of activity will change to red.

Colombian News.

It was through an extraordinary statement that the Geological Service gave details about the current situation of the Nevado del Ruiz Volcano.

They stated that the seismicity record associated with rock fracturing inside the volcanic edifice continues.

“Yesterday, April 6, 3,100 events were recorded, reaching a maximum magnitude of 2.9 ML, corresponding to the 04:53 pm earthquake,” they initially reported.

They later added that said “seismic activity remains located in the southwestern sector of the volcanic edifice, at depths between 2 and 4 km, at a distance from the crater less than yesterday (a slight approach to it has been observed). So far today, April 7 (9 am), around 1,500 earthquakes have been recorded.

In the statement they also specified:

  • The seismic activity related to the movement of fluids inside the volcanic conduits was associated with several pulsatile and continuous emissions of ash that were confirmed through the web cameras used for volcanic monitoring and by reports from inhabitants in the various sectors of the municipality. from Murillo (Tolima).
  • The maximum height of the column of gases and/or ash observed was 1200 m, measured from the top of the volcano with a preferential dispersion direction to the southeast.
  • The output of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere remains at levels similar to those observed in previous days.
  • There were reports of several thermal anomalies located in the Arenas crater, one of them reaching the highest value recorded since 2017.

If the level of activity, the alert goes to Red

From the Colombian Geological Service they stressed “that the activity of the volcano at ORANGE LEVEL can fluctuate and at times decrease compared to previous days, without this meaning that it has returned to a lower level of activity.”

Adding that to change the level and return to the yellow level, a prudential time is required where trends and patterns can be observed that allow inferring the possible decrease in activity, “which is why it is noted that the level of activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano will remain at ORANGE LEVEL for several weeks.”

Similarly, they detailed that during said time, “in the event that there is an acceleration of the processes that suggest an imminent eruption or that the eruption itself occurs, the activity level will be changed to red.”

Keep in mind!

  • HE recommends the community to remain calm, follow all the instructions of the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) and local authorities, and be attentive to the information provided by the Colombian Geological Service on the evolution of the state of the volcano.
