Félix Maradiaga launches a global campaign for the freedom of Monsignor Álvarez

"Disgusting and cynical" Monsignor Báez describes Ortega's scenery to exhibit Bishop Álvarez

The former politician and presidential hopeful Felix Maradiaga called for a global campaign for the freedom of Monsignor Rolando Alvarez, Bishop of the Diocese of Matagalpa, who has been imprisoned for more than eight months by the Daniel Ortega regime.

According to a press release, released by the communication team of the also political scientist, the objective of this initiative is “so that all nations are aware of the situation that the Catholic Church is experiencing in Nicaragua.”

He also points out that the campaign will be accompanied by a series of actions with permanent diplomatic influence to increase international pressure and thus achieve the release of the prelate.

The also exiled politician called on all people and organizations who wish to join this initiative “to unite in prayer and spread the campaign on their social networks and media.”

“The world campaign of prayer for the freedom of Monsignor Rolando Álvarez is a show of solidarity and support for all the people who suffer persecution and violations of their human rights in Nicaragua, but it is also a call for justice and freedom for all political prisoners,” the letter adds.

Through his Twitter account, Maradiaga expressed that “Monsignor Rolando Álvarez was the only voice left free to preach the truth that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are the life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

The justice of Daniel Ortega sentenced Monsignor Álvarez to 26 years in prison, after the religious refused to be exiled from Nicaragua. He is currently being held in the Jorge Navarro Penitentiary System, in Tipitapa.

The prelate is the first Nicaraguan bishop imprisoned by the Sandinista dictatorship and accused of crimes of treason against the homeland, for allegedly violating Law 1055, Law of Sovereignty. This legal tool was approved to persecute opponents of the regime.

The relatives of Monsignor Rolando Alvarez they were able to visit him on Saturday, March 25, after a month and a half of solitary confinement. In the images disclosed in the government media, it was possible to notice the loss of weight in the religious.
