Venezuela proposes energy alliance to combat the food crisis in the region

Vice President Delcy Rodríguez participated in the first Anti-Inflation Summit, convened by the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador. During her speech, she pointed out that currently food inflation is one third of general inflation and with it poverty and inequality increase. She said that “Venezuela at full productive capacity without exhortatory sanctions can be a fundamental part of the solution”

Venezuela proposed developing an energy and petrochemical integration alliance in Latin America and the Caribbean that would reduce extra-regional dependency. The proposal was presented by the Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, during his participation in the first Anti-inflationary Summit, convened by the president of Mexico Andrés López Obrador.

«Inflation in the food sector is the most pressing problem facing the planet, today food prices are at the second highest peak since 1960. Food inflation is a third of general inflation and with it poverty increases , inequality,” he stressed.

He said that it is necessary to have tools that allow a solution to the food crisis, “outside the neoliberal recipe.” He explained that the proposal consists of using the energy of the countries of the region to produce food for all ».

He recalled that the country has a large oil reserve and said that it is the eighth country with the largest gas reserves, essential products for the production of agro-inputs. He asserted that these aspects would boost production and would allow responding to the demand for inputs for the agricultural sector.

«Venezuela at full productive capacity without exhortatory sanctions can be a fundamental part of the solution. Those who insisted on excluding our country from the global energy formula acknowledge their blunder. Venezuela has an installed fertilizer production capacity of 1.5 million tons per year.

I propose the creation of joint projects with other countries of the continent for the production of fertilizers.

Other of the proposals presented by Venezuela is the construction of a regional financial architecture and promoting payment schemes with local currencies. Similarly, work together with other international economic organizations, such as the BRICS, of which Brazil is already a part.

At the summit, in which 10 countries participate, regional economic and trade proposals were presented to mitigate the inflationary effects on the basic food basket in the region.
