The Caldas Departmental Risk Management Council made the decision to declare a public calamity in the department, since this figure allows the territorial authorities and different relief organizations to be prepared with resources and a humanitarian response from different sectors in the event of an eventual eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano.
The decision was taken as a preventive measure and given the recent activity inside the volcanic massif, that in the face of a probable eruption, you must have the respective authorities with the greatest availability to attend to it, testing all their reaction capacity for this kind of natural contingencies.

public calamity It is a measure that is included in Law 1523 of 2012 and allows the adoption of the National Disaster Risk Management Policy.
Said measure is susceptible to being declared before the manifestation of one or several natural events, as is the case of a possible eruption of the Nevado del Ruíz volcanoor unintentional anthropogenic, that could cause human, material, economic or environmental damage or loss, generating an intense, serious and widespread alteration in normal conditions.
The rule requires the municipality, district or department to execute emergency response actions, rehabilitation and reconstruction of the affected territory.
The declaration of public calamity allows the department to have the necessary resources to respond to an eventual emergency quickly and effectively.
