“They did not cross the border”: 25,000 chicks that were going to be exported from Colombia to Venezuela were slaughtered.

The 25,000 chicks were bought by a Venezuelan businesswoman, who had previously bought two loads, which passed without any problem.

News Colombia.

After preventing the passage of 25,000 chicks from Colombia to Venezuela, they had to be slaughtered.

Given the situation, the affected businessmen affirm that this generates distrust to continue carrying out commercial exchanges through international bridges.

The Venezuelan company bought it from a businessman from the department of Tolima in Colombia, and the export was going to be done through the border between Cúcuta and Venezuela.

For this group of businessmen it would be the third installment, they had previously purchased two loads that passed without any problem.

«In my warehouse, Cúcuta free zone, observing a load of 25,000 chicks that unfortunately are going to be slaughtered in the city of Bucaramanga, this because the ICA made a decision that I do not share, in the sense that the trading companies in Colombia they cannot export chicks,” said Yesid Sarmiento, a customs agent.

However, the Venezuelan businesswoman said that she did have permission to allow her the third load of chicks.

«We signed an agreement in which this was the last export that the company made until the situation of the marketers was clear; it was signed on March 30 in the presence of Dr. Víctor Paz,” said Siley Luna, a businesswoman.

What was the ICA’s response?

The Colombian Agricultural Institute, ICA, is a government entity in charge of regulating, controlling and promoting the agricultural sector in the country.

The ICA’s functions include epidemiological surveillance and control of animal and plant diseases.

“Given the situation presented on the border with Venezuela in the city of Cúcuta, it is important to emphasize that the birds did not meet the aforementioned requirements, so the ICA cannot allow their departure to the neighboring country; since it puts sanitary status and future exports at risk,” the entity clarified in a statement.

For its part, the ICA also assured that it did not order the slaughter of the birds.

In turn, the chicks should not have left the establishment without the approval of the export animal health certificate and compliance with the procedure that guarantees their traceability.
