The Florida Senate has approved a bill that prohibits abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, thereby halving the time authorized by the law so far in force (15 weeks). The House of Representatives must approve the proposal before Gov. Ron DeSantis signs it this week. Republicans control both the legislature and the state government, so the approval is considered a fact.
The proposal, which has been strongly opposed by Democrats, has been widely debated in the various media and establishes some exceptions.
For example, if the life of the pregnant woman is in danger or if the cause of the pregnancy is rape or incest.
The rule also establishes that abortion drugs can only be dispensed by a doctor in person.
During Monday’s debate in which it passed, Democratic Sen. Lauren Book urged women considering an abortion to contact her and not risk their safety.
“Please don’t take matters into their hands. Don’t put your safety at risk. No clandestine abortions. There are people and funds that can help you. It doesn’t matter where you live or how desperate you are,” Book said, according to the AP agency.
In March Governor DeSantis said he would sign a law restricting abortion to six weeks.
